Small Group Descriptions

 

Launch

In this small group you will improve skills such as:

  • Vocabulary for everyday
  • Reading (how to read new words
  • Understanding what you read
  • Spelling, grammar and writing sentence
  • Math for everyday living
  •  Filling out forms
  •   Essential Skills such as thinking, communicating with others, solving problems, managing time

With these skills you will be able to do tasks related to your goals.

Future Bound: Further Education

 If you’ve set your sights on high school, post-secondary education or apprenticeship, this group will help you develop the skills you need to succeed in further education. You will be…

  •  Building and applying the skills needed to complete academic tasks
  • Writing  for academic tasks (journaling, paragraphs, essays)
  • Reading comprehension
  •   Working on group and independent projects

Future Bound: Employment

If your long-term goal is employment, this group will help you build the skills to be successful in the workplace.  You will improve...

  •     Reading and understanding work-related materials
  •     Math skills to complete work-related tasks
  •    Writing to communicate effectively in the workplace
  •    Document use (filling in forms, reading charts and tables)
  • “Soft skills” that will increase your ability to find and keep a job (thinking, problem-solving, working with others, oral communication, time management
  •    Working on projects independently and as a member of a group 

ESU in partnership with TLG

ESU: Essential Skills Upgrading is offered as a partnership between the Waterloo District School Board and The Literacy Group Kitchener site. 

 ESU is for adults who want to… 

  •       Improve Essential Skills for re-training and employment
  •       Increase employment options by focusing on pre-GED materials. 

The GED (General Equivalency Diploma) is an alternative to a high school diploma. 

Essential Skills are the nine skills identified by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) as essential for work, learning and life.  In this program you will focus on building these skills to be able to complete workplace tasks.  ESU also offers pre-GED upgrading (foundational reading, writing and math skills) as a first step in preparing for the GED tests.  

Math Sense

In this small group, you will work on skills needed to do math tasks.  You will have your own training plan and work at your own pace.  A tutor will be there to help you anytime you need it.   You will learn… 

  • Basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  •  Fractions
  •  Decimals
  • Percents
  •  Measurement
  • Analyzing data
  • Solving word problems 

Internet Café

Supplement your group or one-to-one learning with online learning in our computer lab.  We have created a menu with some of the best internet-learning sites available, and in your training plan we will include recommend sites for you to use. 

Internet Café is also available to learners using The Learning Hub.  The Internet Café is self-directed, but someone will always be available to help you.  Our Internet Café menu includes sites that focus on: 

  •  Pre-GED Preparation
  • Grammar and Vocabulary
  • Math
  • Phonics
  • Reading comprehension
  • Writing (spelling, sentences, punctuation, paragraphs)

Basic Computers

 This small group will build your confidence and basic skills with computers.   

 You will learn: 

  •       Keyboarding
  •      Using email to send messages and documents
  •      Searching the internet (Google)
  •      Basic word processing
  •     Creating, naming and saving files

 Golden Oak Book Club

Part of the Ontario Library Associations Forest of Reading annual book award, the Golden Oak Book club lets you vote for the winning author.

  • Have fun reading and discussing Canadian books
  • Gain skills to accomplish everyday tasks
  • Foster your love of reading!
  • Vote for your favourite book for the Golden Oak Award

Modules

 Modules provide an exciting new opportunity to focus on high-interest themes for 4-6 weeks.   We will offer a variety of modules throughout the year, on topics such as: 

  •          Setting goals
  •         Dealing with conflict
  •         Taking charge of your health (health literacy)
  •         Managing money
  •        Getting to know your community
  •        Volunteering
  •         Understanding personality types
