Apply to become a tutor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a tutor for an adult learner.

Tutoring can be a very rewarding experience. It can give you the opportunity to make a real difference in a person's life, and enrich your own.  We will provide you with training, resources and on-going support.

Adult Literacy Tutors help adult learners build basic reading ,writing, math computer skills and essential work skills through one-to-one or small group instruction. To help you decide if tutoring is right for you, click here to download a copy of the tutor position responsibilities.

Training: Tutor applicants will participate in a 15-hour workshop that will provide instructional training.   At the end of the workshop, tutors become certified Laubach Instructors.  Tutors will have also learned about the special circumstance of teaching adults.

Time and commitment: On average, a tutor will spend 1 hour per week preparing for lessons and 2 hours per week teaching.  We ask for a minimum 1 year commitment.

Here are the steps you will take to become an Adult Literacy Tutor:

  1.  Print, fill out and mail the tutor application.  Click here to download a copy of our tutor application.  Or call us and we will mail you an application package.
  2. Meet with a program coordinator so we can tell you more about the position and you can get all the information you need. The session is usually about 1 hour and is a requirement for all tutors in our program.
  3. Attend a Tutor Training workshop.  Training take place 3 times per year. The workshop is 15 hours in total over one weekend.
  4. Wait while the Program Coordinator matches you with an adult learner. We consider many variables to ensure that your tutoring experience is rewarding, and making the right match sometimes takes a little time.
